TO WHOM THE EPISTLE WAS ADDRESSES THESSALONICA (see Winer, Realwörterbuch), called Therme by Herodotus and Thucydides, lies at the head of the Sinus Thermaicus. The later name was given to it by Cassander in honor of his wife Thessalonica, a daughter of Philip. (Others allege that the name was intended to commemorate a victory over the Thessalians.)
